Gottman Method Couples Counselling

Relationships are central to our wellbeing, yet they can sometimes begin to feel overwhelming, distant, or caught in patterns that are difficult to change. The Gottman Method is a highly respected, research-based approach to couples counselling that focuses on strengthening the foundations of your relationship while giving you practical tools to navigate challenges together.

In our work together, we explore both the strengths in your relationship and the areas that may feel more difficult right now. The Gottman Method is designed to help couples:

  • Improve communication and feel truly heard and understood

  • Rebuild trust and emotional connection

  • Manage conflict in healthy and constructive ways

  • Deepen friendship, intimacy, and shared meaning

  • Work as a team when facing life’s stresses and transitions

This approach is collaborative and non-judgmental. Rather than focusing on blame, we work together to understand the patterns within your relationship and build on the strengths that already exist.

Whether you are navigating a difficult period, hoping to repair past hurts, or simply wanting to strengthen your connection, Gottman Method Couples Counselling offers a clear and practical pathway toward greater understanding, closeness, and resilience.

How Couples Therapy Works

Couples therapy begins with a structured assessment phase before moving into skills-based therapy. This helps build a clear understanding of your relationship dynamics so that therapy can be tailored to your specific needs as a couple.

  • This process allows therapy to focus on what will be most helpful for your relationship.

    The assessment process typically includes:

    • A joint assessment session
    • An individual session with each partner
    • The Gottman Relationship Check-Up questionnaire (completed individually online)
    • A feedback session where we review the results and develop a therapy plan together

The Gottman Relationship Check-Up is a comprehensive research-based questionnaire that helps identify relationship strengths, areas of tension, and patterns in communication and conflict.

  • Following the assessment phase, sessions focus on developing practical, evidence-based skills to support your relationship.

    Common areas of focus include:

    • Strengthening emotional connection and friendship
    • Managing conflict more constructively
    • Improving communication and understanding
    • Creating shared meaning and future goals

Sessions are collaborative and paced in a way that allows both partners time to reflect, understand patterns, and practice new ways of interacting.
